Waking up at the schoolyard
At five o’clock, I am wide awake. Although it’s cold, that’s not the reason. I write a bit and start packing. Not long after, the first children trickle into the adjacent schoolyard. They babble, swing, and mess around. A peaceful scene.
Uncertain weather on the train route
The rest of the day stays dry (yeahhh). The sun occasionally shows itself, even though the wind is chilly. Typical uncertain weather: it’s warm with the sun, but cold without it. After some stress in the huge supermarket – too big, too crowded, too much – I continue along the old train route.
Hiking is a mental sport
Hiking, I am convinced, is largely a mental sport. Today, I count down the kilometers and think only about arriving. And that is tough. Really tough. The monotony is getting to me. I’m tired of the straight path. At the same time, I remind myself that big goals are rarely achieved through constant excitement and thrill. You reach them by continuing to take the boring, monotonous steps, day after day, even when the view doesn’t change. But I just don’t feel like it right now.
Gourmet camping cuisine on the heath
A warm meal in a beautiful stretch of heath makes a lot of things right. Gourmet camping cuisine, if I may say so. After 29 km, I see my shelter in the distance. I cheer. Too early. A high fence and one more. I read the information again. The shelters are part of a riding club, and you can also use their toilets. Nice. Then I’ll walk around to the entrance. No signs. No path. Just fences. Lots of fences.
Searching, searching, searching for the shelter
I try from all sides. Each time I run into barbed wire or a fence. At one point, I’m not even twenty meters from the shelter but on the wrong side. I become despondent. Meanwhile, I’m covered in scratches and a tick finds me very tasty.
In a moment of desperation, I decide to walk 6 km further to another shelter. Then I see a man with a dog. He points out an overgrown gate and an invisible path. This?? In Denmark? Where everything is impeccably maintained?
Zennnnnnnnn
When I finally arrive at the shelter with 32.4 km logged, something wonderful happens. All my irritation disappears in an instant. I have rarely felt this Zen.
