Rain, the whole day long
Perhaps because I was spoiled with a dry day yesterday, I can’t handle the rainy weather today. More rain and nearly all day. By four o’clock, it’s still dry and clear, and I’m wide awake. I see the moon rise and then the sun. I’ve actually never seen the moon like that before. Amazing!
It’s well past noon when I set off. I just couldn’t bring myself to venture into the wetness. Luckily, today’s route isn’t too long. Officially twenty kilometers. That’s of course if you find your shelter in one go. It’s very windy, it’s cold, and it almost continuously rains. I’m cursing it. I’m no longer enjoying it. And again that stupid long straight road.
A brick through the window of the National meteorological service
I’m holding on to the forecast that it will be dry by six, but the weather forecasters have tricked me again. It’s just getting windier and rainier. I feel like throwing a brick through the window of the national meteorological service. But every disadvantage has its advantage, as Cruijff would say. At least I have the wind at my back and I can prepare my warm food at a covered picnic table, out of the wind.
Soaked in the supermarket
In the supermarket, they look at me angrily because I’m making everything wet. Water is dripping from my poncho and from everything I have with me. The supermarket employee has just mopped the floor. Yes, ma’am, I’m doing it on purpose. Well? I’m also walking through some kind of village. Probably very nice, but not fun right now. No one on the street and big puddles everywhere. I can’t even take photos, because then I’ll drown my camera.
The weather gods are playing a game
When I reach my shelter, having left the old railway line behind (ha ha), I find myself in a forest and heath area, and it stops raining. Just when it can rain, because I’m dry anyway, it stops. It feels like the weather gods are playing a game with me.
And then… the grand finale
But man, man, where have I ended up? It’s so beautiful here! I feel euphoric, and the grumpiness slowly fades away. I warm my feet, make a cup of hot soup, and set up my bed. My little home for tonight is ready. And suddenly, I feel very privileged that I get to experience all of this.
