From Vikings to Dog Mess

Escaped from snoring

The evening and morning are very pleasant and educational with Jim and Morten. I enjoy their stories, life experience, and lightheartedness. Wonderful. I am indeed glad that I sleep in the small shelter and they are in the large one a few meters away, because the snoring of one of these gentlemen is impressive.

Partners in crime

And finally, I have partners in crime: Jim and Morten are also slowly getting started. Drinking coffee, chatting, and endlessly packing. I never understand how some people are ready in ten minutes. It always takes more time than I think, and these gentlemen wholeheartedly agree with me.

Military food to grab

In the shelter, there are a few boxes of military food left behind. We can take whatever we want: freeze-dried pasta bolognese, chocolate muesli, hummus, peanut butter, jam and much more. All lightweight. If I ever can’t find a supermarket, at least I have an emergency supply.

Most important historical site of the Vikings

Nearby Jelling is known as the birthplace of Denmark and is the most important historical site of the Vikings in the country. The famous rune stones, burial mounds, and church are impressive to see. No wonder it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1994.

The shit hit the fan

It’s drizzling occasionally and the weather is somewhat gloomy, but real rain fortunately stays away. In a beautiful spot, I’m preparing another delicious meal at a picnic table. However, this time I’m not making a ‘my kitchen today’ video. I’m feeling really grumpy because I stepped right into a dog poop.

What I really can’t stand are poop, vomit, and festering wounds. I have boundless admiration for people in healthcare. My father was a doctor and my daughter is a nurse, but this generation clearly missed that love for the profession. I’m cleaning my shoe while I’m about to retch. DISGUSTING.

Warming up by the fire

Later, I come across a shelter spot that isn’t on the map. There’s a fire burning, and two friends are eating. They tell me they will leave soon. I decide to stay instead of walking another 5 km to the next camping spot. Shortly after, I’m enjoying the warmth of the fire. After that dog mess, I think I deserve it.
