Bowel Alarm
I wake up for the first time at eight o’clock. I can’t believe it. I feel a bit weak and my stomach is upset. Fortunately, this campsite has a toilet, and I make grateful use of it too often.
Time flies
I sit at the table, wandering in thought and writing, even if it’s just a few words. Before I know it, it’s half past eleven. How is that possible? I don’t understand how time can disappear in breakfast, making coffee, washing myself, and reorganizing my things.
Ma Flodder* visits
Meanwhile, cyclists occasionally pass by to get water. Suddenly, a woman on a mobility scooter drives onto the grass. I look up in surprise. This place isn’t exactly next to a village. She reminds me of Ma Flodder and says something in Danish. I ask if she speaks English. With a deep sigh, she tells me that her motorcycle is missing.
Motorcycle stolen
For a moment, I think I misunderstand her. “Are you saying it’s been stolen?” She nods. Then she pulls out her phone from her neckline and shows me a picture of a tough white motocross bike. “It’s been stolen. Those bastards.” I tell her I haven’t seen anything, but I’ll keep an eye out. She takes another drag from her cigarette, thanks me, and then wobbles dangerously away over the bumpy grass. For a moment, I’m afraid her scooter will tip over due to her weight, but it’s fine.
*Ma Flodder is a famous fictional character from a highly popular Dutch comedy franchise called Flodder. She is the matriarch of an antisocial, chaotic, and dysfunctional working-class family. She always wears a stained house dress, a floral apron, and iconic rubber boots. She constantly smokes a cigar and brews illegal moonshine in her kitchen. She is fiercely protective of her family, loud, and completely ignores social norms.
From one place to another
Eventually, I don’t leave until one o’clock. My legs feel heavy, and my stomach is still protesting. The decision is quickly made when I arrive at the next overnight spot about ten kilometers further. There’s a shower, a kitchen, and a cafeteria where you can sit and charge your phone. The supermarket is seven hundred meters away. What luck I have again.
Today’s trail magic: aluminum foil
In the well-equipped kitchen, I also find a roll of aluminum foil. I actually wanted to buy that, but I forgot. I only need a small piece. To cook outside in the wind, I need a windscreen, which can easily be made from aluminum foil and tape. Another problem solved!
Now I’ll go to bed early and hope that I feel completely fit again tomorrow.
