This can take weeks or even months…
I’ve noticed that this is an issue for many people. They look at it rather doubtfully and with a certain disgust. But it’s not as bad as you think.
Firstly, the old-fashioned washcloth works wonders. Although I use the so-called Swedish dishcloths. They dry very quickly and absorb so much moisture that you can also use them as a towel.
Secondly, you can wash in many ways and at many places. Over time, you’ll naturally become aware of this. In Sweden, for example, there are many lakes with super clear water. That makes it easy. In Scandinavia, there are also many public toilets that are spotless and not heavily visited. You can use them peacefully for a quarter of an hour or half an hour without someone knocking on the door. Ideal for washing yourself completely or doing a small wash.
And you become resourceful. You naturally let go of fixed washing times because you don’t always have water before going to bed or when you wake up. Take advantage of water whenever you encounter it and make sure you have soap, a washcloth, and a towel at hand, so you can quickly adapt.
Here in Portugal, there are quite a few fountains or public water taps. Each country has its own quirks. You’ll learn this along the way.
And is there really no water? Or very little? Then I always have baby wipes with me. Ideal for freshening up, but also for cleaning your pan, plate, and cutlery.
And yes, sometimes you just stink. That’s part of it. However, it’s wonderful when you can take a shower. That really is a gift!
Questions cost nothing. Do you have a question? I answer one every Sunday.
Vragen kost nix is Dutch for “Asking costs nothing.” Nix is a playful, made-up word. It doesn’t actually exist in Dutch. It’s a phonetic spelling of niks, the Dutch word for nothing, and it’s also a nod to my name, Marnix, shortened to Nix. Every Sunday, I publish a new edition of Vragen kost nix, where I answer a question from one of my followers. It can be about my travels, life on the road, or anything else they’re curious about. So, if you have a question, just ask. Asking costs nix!
