New destination
After more than four months of hiking through Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, and now a few weeks back in the Netherlands, it’s time for a new adventure and I’ve made up my mind!
Twelve historical villages
On September 29th, I will depart by bus to Portugal, where I will start the Grande Rota Aldeias Históricas, also known as the GR22. The GR22 is referred to as the route of the Historical Villages. This long-distance hike in Central Portugal, near the Spanish border, connects twelve unique Portuguese villages and is about 600 km long. Many of these have a medieval character, featuring old city walls, castles, and narrow streets.
Culture and nature in Central Portugal
The route passes through historical villages, but also through rugged nature areas, including the Serra da Estrela, along the Douro, and through the Côa Valley. The Tagus River is also on the itinerary with river beaches, where I can definitely take a refreshing dip.
What appeals to me most is the combination of nature and culture. Walking through a landscape where people walked, lived, and left their marks centuries ago. I am curious about the stories I will encounter along the way. And which stories will naturally present themselves. I will certainly be happy to report on that. I can’t wait; I miss the routine of hiking and writing.
Final preparations
Just over a week before my departure. I am busy with the final preparations, Wheelie is getting a bath today, the route is now on my phone, and my new shoes are ready at home.
Passport ready, plans made, off to beautiful Portugal!
