Sunshine on my tent
It’s quite chilly at night. Not that I’m bothered by it, but I do have to crawl deep into my sleeping bag to avoid getting cold. I’m woken up by a ray of sunshine on my tent. It’s delightful. I unzip my tent and feel the rays on my face. The coffee is quickly brewed and I enjoy this moment of happiness.
Tinkling bells
Then I hear soft bells tinkling. A shepherd walks by in the distance. I’m curious if he sees me or if my dark green tent blends into the surroundings. The sound of the bells becomes less audible. They head in the other direction. Calmly, I pack my things and set off again. The wind is still icy, but a sunny and quite warm day awaits me.
Devastating wildfires
All day I see only burnt trees. A consequence of the extremely devastating wildfires caused by prolonged drought and heat in September 2024. Bushes and grass are growing back, but the trees are still missing. Only the black, charred remains.
Impressive rock formations
I walk past one rock formation after another. Each one more beautiful than the last. What a unique and truly magnificent environment! I take about three billion photos because I keep seeing something that’s even more beautiful or unique. And the contrast with the blue sky makes it all the more stunning.
Lunch at the ruins
At the ruins of the castle of Moreira de Rei, I enjoy my lunch, with a stunning view of the village and the valley. By now, I’m completely entranced by all this beauty.
Luxury in Trancoso
Then comes the final stretch to Trancoso, the fifth historical village of the twelve and quite a large place. It is exhausting, there is a lot of climbing to do, but this part is again wonderfully beautiful, with even more rock formations that look round and smooth. I have booked a hostel and decide to go out for a nice meal. After three days of surviving on chips, noodles, and bread, I think I deserve to treat myself. That works out well in a restaurant that specializes in cod dishes. It is delicious and forms a lovely end to the day. First a refreshing shower and then later a bed with fragrant sheets.
