Forrest Gump

Terrible night

Even though I’m cozily tucked in my tent, I’m sleeping terribly. Probably because I overindulged yesterday with beer, chips, lots of meat, coffee after six, and chocolate. I just didn’t feel like being healthy and went all out. For the first time, I also feel a bit of homesickness—a feeling I don’t actually know at all.

God punishes immediately

After I’ve been to the supermarket, and this time I’m making sensible purchases, I pay for it immediately. The road climbs up towards the church of Vessigebro. My legs feel heavy and the weather is oppressive. God punishes immediately…

Charging in the church

I take the safe route. When I see that I can charge my power banks at the church, I do it right away. I still have some power left, but I’m not sure if it’s enough. I’m still hesitant to fully trust my solar panels. In a kind of canteen behind the church, I sit down. There, I write a bit while my things charge. My legs and body also get a little rest.

Back to car-free Sundays

I continue my path along paved, car-free roads. It takes me back to the seventies when the Den Uyl cabinet introduced car-free Sundays due to the oil crisis. I was ten years old at the time, and the highways suddenly turned into bike paths and playgrounds. I’ll never forget roller skating on the highway.

Sometimes I feel like Forrest

I have that feeling now with Wheelie. I glide silently over the asphalt. At one point, I pass three young ladies. They are walking side by side and taking up the whole road. I hear them speaking English. “Ah, finally someone I can understand,” I say as they let me pass. One of the girls lives on a nearby farm, the other two are on vacation. “You look like Forrest Gump, running so fast!” the exuberant blonde calls out to me laughing. I can’t help but laugh. Sometimes I do feel a bit like that.

Incredible sleeping spot

After all the asphalt comes a fantastic stretch of forest. The paths are nearly as smooth as asphalt, and there Wheelie continues to glide. My sleeping spot… a beauty like no other. A sort of little peninsula surrounded by water on three sides. Forrest can sleep well again!
