The Christ Stone

The shelter exists after all…

After the turbulent night in the ‘horror house’, I’m quite curious about the shelter. Now that it’s light, I walk the forest path again. Indeed quite overgrown and difficult to find. And there it is: just about thirty meters from where I stood in the pitch dark yesterday, there’s a beautiful shelter, easily accessible via another, slightly longer forest path…

Cellar with surprises

Now in daylight, I also take a good look at the house, including the cellar. It turns out to actually be an extra floor, with many more rooms. On one side, there are windows, because the house is situated on a slope. It must have been a beautiful house at one time.

Irrational fears

Off I go again. I survived this adventure, and it teaches me once more that fears are almost always irrational. We let ourselves be driven mad by the news and scary movies. It’s bizarre how much influence that has on our well-being. Just such a shame.

Autumn

On the way, I am confronted with the fact that it suddenly seems to be turning into autumn. Swallow. Yellow leaves are falling from the birch trees, even though it is perfectly still. The weather is somewhat ominous, but it is completely silent. No traffic. No people. No birds. No rustling leaves. Occasionally, I see a car parked near a house, but there seems to be no life. A strange feeling. Only my footsteps and an owl break the silence.

Legend with a lot of imagination

The so-called Christ stone is impressive. It is a huge boulder that has split in two. According to the legend, lightning struck here, killing the pagan leader Sten Ilie, who was pursuing the Christian missionary Il Bert. The stone then split in two, and inside one of the halves appeared something that resembled a crucified Christ. You really need a lot of imagination to see that.

Shelter with electricity

Just before I reach my shelter – with drinking water, toilet, and electricity (!) – located 1.7 kilometers beyond the town of Osby, I think I find the very last blueberries of the season. What a delightful surprise. I greedily pick a plate full. They will be part of my breakfast tomorrow.
