The worst night ever

New record

Yes! I’ve set a new record again: the worst night ever since my departure. I feel like I haven’t slept at all. A few catnaps, that’s all. What’s the reason? No idea.

It was crowded at the shelter, yes, that’s true, but all nice people and everyone was considerate of each other. I lay comfortably alone in my little tent. Right next to me was a German father walking with his teenage daughter – respect! – both in one tent, and further along were two shelters with six cyclists from Poland and Germany.

Caminota scenes

But well, that’s life. The night lasted long, but I don’t feel too bad. Onwards. My sleeping companions leave early. They are all worried about the expected rain and thunder. The shelters on this route are crowded, and they want a spot for the night. It seems like caminota scenes. Just what I don’t want and never have participated in on the seven caminos I’ve walked. There was always a solution, and I have never reserved an inn. I refuse to do that. I feel that the true camino feeling is lost that way. But well… everyone has their own path, of course.

Old-fashioned with a washcloth

About fifty meters from the shelter, there’s a toilet building. With warm water, even. What luxury! I washed thoroughly – old-fashioned with a washcloth, that still works – and I’m off again, fresh along this beautiful south coast. It’s a delight. Nice little villages, beautiful houses, unique forests, lovely beaches, and lots of apple orchards.

Apples are big business

I wonder how those little trees can carry so many kilos of apples. Sometimes I pick up an apple that has fallen to the ground. I think that’s okay. They often have some spots, but if you cut those off, you have delicious fruit. Apples are big business around here. I pass by a sales point with all kinds of apple products: cider, jam, apple juice, and applesauce. I hope to grab a piece of apple pie, but they just don’t have that.

Blackberries!

Not long after, I come across an enormous blackberry bush with the most beautiful, largest, and sweetest blackberries ever. That makes it more than worth it. I know what will be in my breakfast tomorrow!
